Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent for business: what it can do, without setting anything up
Updated 21 October 2026
Hermes Agent gets a lot of attention from developers, and most of what is written about it assumes you want to install it on a server. If you run a business, the more useful question is simpler: what will it actually do for me on a normal Tuesday?
This page explains what Hermes Agent is in plain terms, clears up a common mix-up about the name, lists the business jobs it is good at today, and points out where it needs a human in the loop.
What Hermes Agent is
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent made by Nous Research and published under the MIT licence. Four things define it:
- Memory across conversations. It keeps notes about you and your work and can search its own past conversations, so context builds up over weeks.
- Skills it writes for itself. After a complex task it can save the method as a reusable skill and improve that skill the next time.
- Scheduled jobs. A built-in scheduler runs tasks you describe in plain language, such as a weekday report, and delivers the result to a messaging app.
- It lives where you chat. You can talk to it from Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord and other messaging apps, not only from a terminal.
It also works with many AI model providers rather than one, and it can use tools: web search, a browser, files and a command line on the machine it runs on.
Hermes Agent is not the Hermes model
Nous Research also publishes language models called Hermes, such as Hermes 3 and Hermes 4. Some articles about “using Hermes for your business” are really about downloading one of those models and running it on a graphics card. That is a different thing.
Hermes Agent is the program that does the work: it holds the memory, runs the schedule and uses the tools. It needs a language model to think with, and that model can come from many providers. You do not need a graphics card or a Hermes model to use it.
Business jobs it handles well today
Hermes Agent becomes useful for a business once it can reach your everyday accounts. On ReadyHermes you connect Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Outlook, Slack and many other apps from the chat: name the app, and the agent replies with a secure sign-in link. With those connected, these jobs work well:
- Customer email. Read new messages and save draft replies for you to check and send.
- Documents. Turn rough notes into a quote, letter or short report in Google Docs.
- A morning brief. Today’s calendar, what to prepare, and anything waiting on you, sent to your phone at a set time.
- Lists and records. Keep an orders or enquiries sheet up to date from your email.
- Research. Compare suppliers or tools, read the pages, and give you a table with sources.
- A simple web page. Build a single page for a launch, a class or a seasonal offer and publish it.
A worked example
Sofia runs a small language school. She connected Gmail and Calendar and asked: “Every evening at 6, check tomorrow’s classes in my calendar, tell me which ones have fewer than three students booked, and draft a short reminder email to the students in each of those classes. Don’t send anything.” Each evening a summary arrives in WhatsApp, and the reminder drafts wait in Gmail. She sends the ones she agrees with. After a week she told it to stop drafting for the beginners’ class, and it remembered.
Where it needs care
- Anything that goes out under your name. Have it draft, not send. Its email access can send, so state “don’t send anything” in every email job.
- Money and promises. Prices it has not been given, refunds and discounts should stay with you.
- Instructions hidden in content. An email or web page can contain text written to steer an AI. Tell it to treat what it reads as information, and keep the drafts-only rule.
- Messaging people who did not ask. Use it on your own customers’ conversations, not for unsolicited outreach.
- Phone calls. On ReadyHermes it does not answer calls; it works through email and chat apps.
Running it yourself or having it hosted
You can install Hermes Agent on your own computer or a rented server for free. Then you handle the machine, updates, model keys, keeping it online and wiring up each messaging app. That suits people who enjoy it. Our page on self-hosting vs managed hosting goes through the trade-off in detail.
ReadyHermes is the hosted route. ReadyHermes is an independent service, not affiliated with Nous Research. You sign up and get your own Hermes Agent running in about a minute, with AI included, so no key is needed to start. There is a 1-hour free trial with no card. After that, Lite is $3.99 a month and Pro is $6.99 a month (offer prices, regularly $5 and $10, and the same when you renew). The price shown is the total you pay. Both include $1 of AI a month on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, roughly 100 everyday requests, and on a paid plan you can add your own key from OpenRouter, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or another provider. See managed Hermes Agent hosting for what that covers.

Questions
What can Hermes Agent do for a small business?
With your email, calendar and documents connected, it can draft customer replies, turn notes into quotes, send you a daily brief, keep a sheet of orders or enquiries up to date and research suppliers, on a schedule if you want. It works best when it drafts and you approve.
Is Hermes Agent free?
The software is open source under the MIT licence, so installing it yourself costs nothing. You still pay for a machine to run it on and for AI model usage. A hosted service such as ReadyHermes bundles the machine, upkeep and some AI into a monthly price.
Can Hermes Agent work with WhatsApp for my business?
Yes, you can chat with it from WhatsApp. On ReadyHermes this uses a linked-device session, not the official WhatsApp Business API, so the phone that hosts the bot must stay online, and a dedicated number is recommended.
Is Hermes Agent the same as the Hermes 3 model?
No. Hermes 3 and Hermes 4 are language models from Nous Research. Hermes Agent is a separate program that uses a language model, from any of many providers, plus memory, tools and a scheduler to get work done.
Do I need technical skills to use it?
Not on a hosted plan. You chat in plain words, and to connect an app you name it in chat and sign in on the page the agent links to. Self-hosting does need comfort with servers and the command line.
